Tyler Perry Gave His Family 60 Days to Find Jobs. His Reason Divided Opinions.

After his mother's death, Tyler Perry gave relatives 60 days to find jobs. His account of firing an aunt has reignited debate over money and family boundaries.

Tyler Perry had spent years helping relatives with money. Then his mother died, and he made a decision that would change their relationship with him.

He gave family members 60 days to find work.

The filmmaker, who grew up in poverty before building a multibillion-dollar entertainment business, said he no longer wanted to provide open-ended financial support.

Some relatives were unhappy. But according to Perry, they all found jobs.

Years later, he explained why he believes helping someone and supporting them indefinitely are not always the same thing.

A Decision After His Mother's Death

Perry's mother, Willie Maxine Perry, died in 2009. She had been an important presence in his life and career.

While she was alive, Perry said he often provided money to relatives at her request.

After her death, he reconsidered that arrangement. He sent family members letters informing them that they had 60 days to become employed.

He recounted the decision during a July 2025 episode of Kirk Franklin's Den of Kings, a conversation about leadership, business, money and legacy.

His reasoning was that he wanted loved ones to build their own financial stability rather than depend on him for regular payments.

They Found Jobs, but Not Everyone Was Happy

Perry said the relatives who received his ultimatum did find jobs.

They were not necessarily well-paid positions. But to Perry, earning their own money created something that financial gifts alone could not provide: a sense of pride.

His account also included disagreement.

He said a family member was angry after he refused to give them $1 million.

The identities and circumstances of those relatives have not been independently detailed in the reports about the interview. The public largely knows this part of the story through Perry's version of events.

Still, his remarks raised a question familiar to many people who help loved ones financially: When does generosity become a responsibility that no longer feels sustainable?

He Offered His Aunt a Job Instead of More Money

Perry described one particularly difficult experience involving an aunt.

He said she regularly contacted him asking for financial help, and he had sent her money.

Eventually, he offered her a job within his business.

He hoped employment would provide a way for her to earn money while developing independence.

But according to Perry, she repeatedly failed to come to work and called out frequently.

He said he ultimately fired her.

For Perry, the situation illustrated the boundary he wanted to maintain between helping a relative and employing someone who was not fulfilling the duties of a job.

His aunt's perspective on the dismissal was not included in the published accounts.

His Own Childhood Shaped His Views on Money

Perry did not begin life surrounded by wealth.

He has spoken openly about growing up in a difficult household in New Orleans, struggling financially and experiencing homelessness before finding success as a playwright.

His entertainment career grew from small stage productions into the Madea film franchise, television series and Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

His experiences help explain why he speaks so strongly about financial independence.

He has also applied similar expectations at home.

During the podcast, Perry said his son, Aman, had to complete chores to earn certain rewards. His goal, he explained, was to teach responsibility rather than make every wish immediately available.

Does Having More Money Mean Giving More to Family?

The question is complicated because family situations are different.

Helping someone through an emergency, supporting a relative who cannot work and providing indefinite financial assistance to an able-bodied adult are not necessarily the same decisions.

People who agreed with Perry's account praised his emphasis on employment, independence and personal boundaries.

Others questioned whether someone with his wealth should expect relatives to work low-paying jobs when he could make their lives easier.

Neither perspective settles what was happening in Perry's family. His public comments do not reveal every relative's financial circumstances, nor do they establish how the relatives felt beyond the examples he described.

The broader issue is how people balance compassion, responsibility and limits.

A Family Decision That Still Starts Conversations

Perry's comments became news in July 2025 because they challenged a common assumption: that becoming wealthy means permanently supporting everyone close to you.

He did not say he had stopped caring about his relatives.

Instead, he argued that he wanted them to build lives with their own sources of income.

The approach, by his account, produced jobs and also resentment.

And that is what makes the story resonate beyond Hollywood.

Tyler Perry believed he was giving his family a path toward independence. Whether his decision felt like help or rejection may depend on which side of that conversation someone was standing.
