U.S. President Donald Trump warned NATO allies that the alliance could face serious consequences if they refuse to help secure the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
In a phone interview with the Financial Times, Trump said the future of NATO could be affected if European partners do not assist the United States in protecting the vital shipping route.
“If there’s no response or if it’s a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO,” Trump said.

Strait of Hormuz Becomes Strategic Focus
The Strait of Hormuz has become a major flashpoint during the conflict between the United States and Iran.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, about 20 percent of global oil supply moves through the strait.
Recent drone attacks, naval mines, and missile threats have raised concerns about the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
Trump Points to Ukraine Support
Trump also reminded NATO members of American support for Europe during the war between Russia and Ukraine.
He argued that the United States helped allies even though the conflict occurred far from American territory.
“We didn’t have to help them with Ukraine,” Trump said. “Ukraine is thousands of miles away from us, but we helped them.”
The president suggested that now is the time for European nations to return that support.
Call for Military Assistance
Trump indicated that he wants NATO partners to contribute forces to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
He suggested European nations could deploy naval forces, commandos, or other military units to assist with operations in the region.
The goal, he said, would be to stop Iranian drones, mines, and other threats targeting shipping lanes.
“You sort of need a lot of people to watch over a few,” Trump said when describing the need for multinational security patrols.
Frustration Over Allied Cooperation
The president also expressed disappointment that some allies have been reluctant to support certain U.S. military actions.
He specifically mentioned frustration over the United Kingdom’s initial refusal to allow the use of its bases for some operations.
Officials in Europe have said discussions about maritime security cooperation are still ongoing.
Several NATO members have previously supported international efforts to protect shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf.
