President Donald Trump signed a new executive order Thursday aimed at helping cities and states remove homeless people from public spaces and redirecting federal resources toward enforcement and substance abuse treatment.
The order, according to a focuses on removing “vagrant individuals from our streets” and prioritizing federal grants for states that enforce bans on loitering, urban camping, open drug use, and squatting. It also calls for increased tracking of registered sex offenders among homeless populations.
“We can no longer allow our cities to be taken over by tents, drugs, and crime,” Trump said during the signing event. “This is about restoring safety and dignity to our communities and helping people get real treatment.”
