The Trump Iran next leader comments have sparked global debate after the president said the United States must play a role in selecting Iran’s future leadership.
President Donald Trump made the remarks Thursday during interviews following the reported death of Iran’s longtime Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during Israeli airstrikes.
Trump suggested that Washington should influence the political transition in Tehran.
Trump Signals U.S. Role in Leadership Transition
“I have to be involved in the appointment,” Trump told Axios during a phone interview.
He compared the potential role in Iran to the influence his administration claimed to have had in Venezuela after the capture of President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.
Trump said the United States would work to ensure that Iran’s next leadership rejects nuclear weapons.

Khamenei’s Son Rejected as Successor
Reports in recent days suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late supreme leader, could be considered as a potential successor.
Trump dismissed that possibility.
“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me,” the president said. “We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”
Trump also told Politico that Mojtaba Khamenei lacks the experience needed to lead the country.
Possible Leadership Alternatives
Trump said Iran’s next leader should likely come from within the country’s existing political structure.
He also commented on Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s former shah, who has positioned himself as a possible alternative leader.
The president said his administration has not seriously considered Pahlavi as a replacement.
Details about Iran’s political system and leadership structure are available through the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Support for Kurdish Pressure on Iran
Trump also expressed support for Kurdish groups reportedly preparing military action against the Iranian government.
“I think it’s wonderful that they want to do that,” Trump said in comments to Reuters.
When asked whether the United States would provide air support for such operations, Trump declined to give details but said the goal would be victory.
Concerns Over Regional Stability
Iran has warned that Kurdish groups operating in Iraq could attempt to launch attacks across its western border.
Iranian officials said they had already carried out strikes against Kurdish positions in Iraqi Kurdistan to prevent such operations.
Analysts warn that any attempt to influence Iran’s leadership could significantly reshape the balance of power in the Middle East.
Strategic Shipping Routes Under Watch
Trump also addressed concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
The president said the United States is closely monitoring the waterway.
“I’m watching Hormuz very closely,” he said.
Roughly one fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the narrow passage, making it a critical strategic point during the ongoing conflict.
As the war and political uncertainty continue, the question of who will lead Iran next could shape the future of the region.
