U.S. President Donald Trump sparked intense legal and political backlash after declaring he is “entitled” to deport people without trials. In a statement made during a press appearance, Trump argued that the current U.S. immigration system “wasn’t meant” to handle legal proceedings for the large number of people he aims to deport.
Trump cited the 1798 Alien Enemies Act as the legal basis for bypassing due process, claiming an “emergency” posed by migrants allegedly released from foreign prisons into the U.S. The statement came in defiance of a recent 9–0 Supreme Court ruling that blocked his administration from deporting individuals without due process.
Critics, including Democratic lawmakers and legal experts, have condemned the assertion as unconstitutional and authoritarian. Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari responded by saying, “There is nothing more American than due process and the rule of law.”
The comments have reignited national debates on immigration policy, executive power, and judicial independence.
