President Donald Trump announced Monday that Americans could receive payment checks funded by tariff revenues as early as next year. He said “hundreds of millions of dollars in tariff money” will be distributed by mid-2026.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters: “We’ve taken in hundreds of millions of dollars in tariff money. We’re going to be issuing dividends probably by the middle of next year, maybe a little bit later than that.”
What is being proposed?
The dividend idea follows Trump’s earlier announcement that he would use tariff revenue to send $2,000 payments to low- and middle-income Americans. Any remaining funds after payments would go toward paying down the national debt. He made those remarks last week.
However, while tariff revenues have climbed — for example the U.S. collected about $215.2 billion in duty revenue in fiscal year 2025. those amounts remain small compared to overall federal revenue. For instance, individual income taxes produced more than $2.6 trillion in fiscal 2025.
