In an unprecedented outcome, Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian inspired by Donald Trump, clinched victory in Poland’s presidential election with a narrow 50.89% of the votes. This surprising win came despite an exit poll that suggested the opposite result, with both candidates initially declaring themselves as victors.
Nawrocki campaigned as a guardian of traditional Polish values and embraced skepticism towards the European Union, resonating with many voters who feel disconnected from EU policies. Meanwhile, his opponent, liberal pro-EU candidate Rafal Trzaskowski, garnered 49.11% of votes, advocating for progressive changes such as easing abortion restrictions and introducing civil partnerships for LGBT couples.
