Why AFI selected Tom Cruise
Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, described Cruise as a global icon and praised the commitment he brings to his work as both an actor and producer. She also highlighted his belief in movies as a shared experience that can bring audiences together.
The recognition places Cruise among a long line of filmmakers and performers whose work AFI says has enriched American culture. The award was established in 1973 and has previously honored figures including John Ford, Bette Davis, Sidney Poitier, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington and Nicole Kidman. Eddie Murphy received the 51st award in 2026.
The American Film Institute describes the Life Achievement Award as its highest honor for a career in film.
A career built around theatrical filmmaking
Cruise's screen career has spanned more than four decades. After early roles in films including Taps and The Outsiders, he became a leading star with Risky Business and Top Gun.
His filmography went on to include Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, The Firm, Interview with the Vampire, Jerry Maguire, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Minority Report and Collateral. He also became closely associated with the Mission: Impossible franchise, serving as both its star and a producer.
The success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 marked another major chapter in his career. The film earned a Best Picture nomination, giving Cruise an Academy Award nomination as one of its producers.

Cruise's awards recognition
Cruise has received three competitive Academy Award nominations for acting. He was nominated for Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, and for Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia. His work as a producer on Top Gun: Maverick brought his fourth competitive nomination.
In November 2025, the Academy presented Cruise with an Honorary Oscar recognizing his dedication to filmmaking and the theatrical experience. The AFI announcement adds another major career honor, this time from an organization focused on preserving and celebrating the history of American film.
Reuters confirmed that Cruise will receive the honor at the April ceremony.
