Tewksbury Hospital safety concerns are drawing attention as Lindsay Clancy remains there following a mistrial in her children’s deaths. The Massachusetts facility has faced reports of workplace assaults, security disputes and deteriorating buildings.
A judge declared a mistrial on September 4, 2026, after jurors could not agree on a verdict. Clancy’s criminal responsibility remains unresolved, and the mistrial was neither a conviction nor an acquittal.
Hospital Reports Raise Safety Questions
The Boston Globe has investigated safety and building conditions at Tewksbury. Its May reporting described concerns involving violence, staff protection and the aging facility.
According to the New York Post’s account of that reporting, police and hospital security responded to more than 500 assault-related calls in 2025. That figure describes calls for assistance, rather than a verified count of separate assaults or criminal convictions.
The Post also cited an April incident in which a visitor allegedly attacked a pregnant employee. Other reported incidents involved assaults on workers and a confrontation between patients.
Dispute Over Security Equipment
The Post, citing the Globe, reported that hospital security personnel had received permission to use pepper gel, handcuffs and batons before restrictions barred defensive tactical equipment in clinical areas in April. Staff members were instead instructed to contact police during emergencies.
Those accounts reflect concerns about protecting employees and patients in a treatment setting. They do not establish that every patient poses a threat or that Clancy was involved in any of the reported incidents.
Massachusetts officials have separately announced a hospital partnership with Tewksbury police aimed at improving safety and security. The announcement also described an emergency notification system for staff, patients and visitors.
What Tewksbury Hospital Provides
The state’s hospital directory describes Tewksbury as a 370-bed facility treating adults with medical and mental illnesses. Its services include continuous nursing care, rehabilitation, psychological services and dialysis.
A state training brochure explains that the hospital includes services operated by both the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health. It serves adults with complex medical conditions as well as patients receiving psychiatric care.
The Post also cited earlier reporting about pests, roof problems and water contamination. Those historical accounts should not be taken as confirmation that every problem remains unresolved today. The Post said the Department of Public Health did not respond to its request for comment.
Clancy’s Case Remains Unresolved
Clancy faces three murder charges in the January 24, 2023, deaths of her children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. Her defense argued that mental illness affected her criminal responsibility.
According to Court TV’s September 6 report, jurors deliberated for seven days after five weeks of testimony and evidence before reporting that they could not reach a unanimous decision.
Clancy remains at Tewksbury while the case continues. The hospital’s safety issues and the legal question of her criminal responsibility are separate matters, neither of which the mistrial resolved.
