Teen Inventor Creates Smart Earring to Help Fight Gender-Based Violence in South Africa

A South African student has created a smart safety earring designed to quietly capture attackers and alert authorities during emergencies.

Ohlale Mphahlele first developed the device in 2020 while she was just 16 years old and studying at SJ van der Merwe Technical High School in Limpopo.

Her invention, called the Alerting Earpiece, was created to address South Africa’s growing crisis of gender-based violence.

Reports on gender-based violence statistics in the country are regularly published by the Statistics South Africa.

How the Smart Earring Works

The device looks like a normal earring but includes several hidden safety features.

If the wearer feels threatened, they can press a small concealed button on the earring.

The device immediately sends an alert message to pre selected emergency contacts.

It also shares the wearer’s live location and captures images of the attacker using a small built in camera.

The information can then be sent to trusted contacts or emergency responders.

Recognition for a Young Innovator

Mphahlele’s invention quickly gained attention after she presented it at a national science exhibition.

Her project earned a bronze medal and praise from education officials in Limpopo.

Global organizations also took notice of the idea because of its potential to protect vulnerable people.

Mphahlele said she wanted to design a tool that could help victims without requiring them to scream or run.

“Technology should not only make life easier,” she said. “It should also protect the vulnerable.”

Gender-Based Violence Remains a Major Crisis

South Africa continues to face serious challenges related to gender-based violence.

According to national studies, about one third of women aged 18 and older have experienced physical violence.

More than 53,000 sexual offences were reported in 2023, including over 42,000 rape cases.

Data from organizations such as UN Women highlights the global effort to reduce violence against women and children.

Turning an Idea Into a Real Product

Five years after creating the prototype, Mphahlele continues to develop the device.

She has established a company called Mphahlele Alerts to focus on refining the Alerting Earpiece and preparing it for launch.

The young innovator is also studying Information Technology to improve the device and expand her work.

She has joined programs designed to help young women develop technology solutions that benefit their communities.

Mission to Protect Vulnerable People

Mphahlele says her long term goal is to make the safety device available to people who face the greatest risks.

She hopes the technology will eventually help schoolgirls walking home alone, women working night shifts, and victims of domestic abuse.

In addition to building her company, she has begun mentoring other young girls interested in technology.

Her work also includes reaching out to non profit groups and public institutions to test the device in high risk areas.

“Safety should not be a privilege,” Mphahlele said as she continues her mission to turn innovation into protection.
