For hundreds of families in Bend, Oregon, Thursday began as an ordinary school day. Children went to class at Silver Rail Elementary, a neighborhood school where parents expected to see them again that afternoon.

Then came the emergency alerts.

By the end of October 15, 2026, three children and a teacher had been killed in a shooting at the school. Two more people were hospitalized. The suspected gunman, a 16-year-old boy, also died after a community member confronted and shot him, police said.

The children who died were just 5, 8 and 11 years old. Their names had not been released in initial police briefings.

A School Day Interrupted by Gunfire

The first emergency call came at about 12:59 p.m., according to the Bend Police Department.

A person outside the school reported that someone with a long gun was shooting into a vehicle. Minutes later, dispatchers received reports that the attacker had entered Silver Rail Elementary.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenage suspect shot at locked doors to force his way inside.

The school went into lockdown. Families began receiving emergency messages, and police directed parents to a nearby reunification site.

The uncertainty was overwhelming: parents knew something terrible was happening, but many did not yet know whether their children were safe.

Three Children and a Teacher Were Killed

During a Thursday evening briefing, authorities confirmed the deaths of three students aged 5, 8 and 11, along with a teacher.

A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to the initial reports.

At the time of the briefing, officials had not released the victims' names. Investigators also had not established a publicly confirmed motive for the attack.

Every age represented a life interrupted: a child only beginning school, another moving through elementary grades, and an older pupil preparing for the years ahead.

The school community was also mourning an educator whose work had brought them into children's lives every day.

A Community Member Intervened Before Police Arrived

Chief Krantz said a community member saw the suspected shooter enter the building, followed him and fatally shot him.

Officers arrived within minutes of the first emergency call, finding the suspected attacker dead before searching the school.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the bystander's intervention while acknowledging that the experience could carry a lasting emotional burden.

Authorities had not publicly identified the person who intervened in the initial briefings.

The investigation must still establish the full sequence of events, including how the teenager obtained his weapon and whether he had any connection to the school.

Parents Waited for News About Their Children

For parents, the hours after the attack were filled with fear and unanswered questions.

A reunification center was established away from the school so families could find their children. Other nearby schools also went into lockdown as a precaution.

Local journalists reported that some students were able to communicate with parents using smartwatches while they remained inside.

Bend is known for its mountains and close-knit neighborhoods. The violence shattered the sense of security that families associate with their local elementary school.

The harm was not confined to those physically injured. Classmates, families, teachers and emergency responders were left to process what had happened.

Bend Gathered to Grieve

Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil in Drake Park on Thursday evening. They stood together, shared prayers and remembered those who had died.

Flowers, candles and balloons appeared near the school.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed heartbreak on behalf of the district. Schools in Bend were closed on Friday to give students, staff and families time to grieve.

In the days ahead, families will face difficult conversations with children who survived. The school community will also need support for those who witnessed the attack and those who lost someone close to them.

What Investigators Still Need to Determine

Police said the suspect was a local 16-year-old boy. His identity and any connection to Silver Rail Elementary had not been publicly confirmed in the earliest reports.

Authorities will examine the weapon, the attacker's movements and the events before the shooting. Any new information about motive or the number of victims should come from official updates and reliable reporting.

The confirmed facts are devastating enough without speculation.

Four Lives Lost, a Community Changed

A school is supposed to be a place where children learn, make friends and grow more independent each day.

For families in Bend, October 15 ended with grief that no statement can erase.

The community member's intervention, the quick police response and the work of first responders are all part of what happened. So are the families waiting for answers and the students who will carry memories of the day into adulthood.

Above all, this is the story of three children and a teacher who should have come home.
