A Sepp Kuss crash at the Tour de France turned a stage win fight into a frightening survival moment.
American cyclist Sepp Kuss narrowly avoided a dangerous fall over a cliff edge after crashing during Stage 20 of the Tour de France.
The Visma Lease a Bike rider had been leading solo on the final descent before a mistake on a right hand bend sent him into a roadside barrier and safety netting.
The crash cost him a chance at a stage win. But many viewers and cycling analysts said the outcome could have been far worse.
A Scary Moment on the Descent
Kuss was descending from the Col de Sarenne toward Alpe d’Huez when he misjudged a corner near the end of the 170.9 kilometer stage.
Video showed him losing balance, sliding across the top of a low concrete barrier and landing against red safety netting beside the road.
On the other side of the netting was a steep drop.

Second Crash in Minutes
The cliff edge scare was not Kuss’s only crash of the day.
Cyclingnews reported that Kuss had already fallen earlier in the final 8 kilometers after hitting a curb near a tunnel exit.
He remounted both times and kept racing despite visible cuts to his arm and leg.
That effort earned him the most combative rider award for the stage, even though the crashes dropped him out of the lead.
Richard Carapaz Takes the Stage Win
The mistakes opened the door for Richard Carapaz of EF Education EasyPost.
Carapaz passed Kuss and went on to win the stage on Alpe d’Huez. Cycling Weekly reported that Carapaz finished ahead of Remco Evenepoel, while Kuss finished third after the two crashes.
The stage covered 170.9 kilometers from Le Bourg d’Oisans and included more than 5,400 meters of climbing, making it one of the toughest days of the race.

Kuss Apologizes to His Family
After the stage, Kuss admitted the crash was frightening.
He apologized to his wife and family watching at home and said he had been pushing himself to the limit.
“I misjudged the corner a bit,” Kuss said, according to Cyclingnews.
He also said he had studied the same descent earlier and thought the corner looked manageable. But in race conditions, while trying to protect a lead, the turn proved harder than expected.
A Painful Penalty After a Brutal Day
Kuss’s difficult day did not end with the crash.
Cycling Weekly reported that he later received a 1,500 Swiss franc fine, a one minute time penalty and a deduction of 75 UCI points for two littering offenses.
The penalties came after he disposed of waste outside designated zones.
Still, the punishment was small compared with what almost happened near the cliff edge.
A Reminder of Cycling’s Thin Margin
The Tour de France often turns on small decisions made at high speed.
For Kuss, one misjudged corner changed the stage. It took away a possible victory and left him bloodied, shaken and lucky.
The safety netting became the quiet hero of the day.
Without it, a late race mistake could have turned one of the Tour’s hardest mountain stages into a tragedy.
Kuss still finished the stage and showed why riders are admired for their toughness. But the crash also reminded fans that in mountain racing, the line between glory and disaster can be only a few inches wide.
