Twenty four year old National Guard member Andrew Wolfe is still fighting for his life after a deadly shooting in Washington, DC, that took the life of 20 year old soldier Sarah Beckstrom. Officials confirmed Wolfe remains in critical condition as the investigation continues.
The attack happened Wednesday while both service members were assigned to duty in the nation’s capital. President Donald Trump shared the update on Thanksgiving, telling the public that Wolfe remains in very serious condition and needs continued prayers and support.
Trump said Wolfe is receiving intensive medical care. He added that the country is hoping for good news, especially after the loss of Beckstrom, who he described as highly respected and outstanding in every way.
Suspect in Custody and Under Investigation
The suspected shooter has been identified as 29 year old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021 under the Operation Allies Welcome program. Federal officials stated he passed multiple screenings and had previously worked with US intelligence.
According to Reuters, his asylum application was approved earlier this year after background checks showed no security concerns.
The US Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department are now reviewing his immigration case. A recent oversight report from the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General found no systemic failures in Afghan refugee vetting efforts, which remains available at justice.gov.
