Ronald Nessman was looking for work after experiencing homelessness when an ordinary wait outside a California car wash became an emergency.
He had just interviewed for a dishwashing position at Applebee’s. Nearby, a baby’s stroller began rolling toward a busy road.
Nessman ran after it and caught it before it reached traffic.
A quick response outside a car wash
The rescue happened in Hesperia in May 2023. According to ABC7 Los Angeles, wind pushed the stroller away while the baby’s great-aunt tried unsuccessfully to catch it.
Nessman was at the car wash with his sister. He reached the stroller near the driveway, then brought the baby boy back to his great-aunt and gave her a hug.
Surveillance footage captured the incident, and the video spread widely. For viewers, the urgent scene had a reassuring ending: someone nearby had noticed and acted.
ABC7 subsequently reported that Nessman had secured the Applebee’s job and completed orientation.
The fresh start continued beyond the video
The story did not end with the restaurant job.
In a first-person account published by AARP in October 2024, Nessman described how his sister had taken him in before he began looking for work.
He also explained what the public response meant to him. People recognized him, spoke kindly to him and helped him see himself differently. He described growing confidence and a renewed sense of personal worth.
After nearly a year working at Applebee’s, he began a job as a long-haul truck driver in April 2024, according to that account.
The rescue was a moment. Rebuilding his life took longer, with family support, employment and continued effort.
Together, those parts make his story more than a viral clip: a baby was brought back from danger, and the man who intervened continued working toward the future he had already begun seeking.
