At Hatton Country World in Warwickshire, England, staff were baffled when they discovered something unusual happening in the guinea pig enclosures. Almost overnight, it seemed, nearly 100 female guinea pigs were pregnant. At first, no one could figure out how it was possible. The staff cared for the animals every day and kept the males and females separated. But soon, the truth came out—and it pointed to one small but determined culprit.
The father-to-be was a male guinea pig who had managed to break free from his own pen and sneak into the all-female enclosure. Until then, he didn’t have a name. After the discovery, staff gave him one that suited him perfectly—Randy.
Randy’s escape had gone unnoticed for weeks. During that time, he went on what could only be described as a mission. Workers later realized that he had slimmed down a little, but no one suspected why. When they finally pieced it together, they understood that this little rodent had been busier than anyone could imagine.
The animal park already housed around 300 guinea pigs, both male and female. But now, with Randy’s efforts, the population was set to explode. Female guinea pigs usually give birth to litters of about four. With up to 100 pregnancies expected, staff estimated there could soon be as many as 400 baby guinea pigs on the way.
Manager Richard Craddock explained how it might have happened. There were two possibilities: either a child had accidentally placed Randy back into the wrong enclosure after handling him, or he had managed to escape his own pen and sneak into the female-only one. Either way, once inside, Randy wasted no time.
“No one knows exactly how long he was in there,” Craddock admitted, “but it could have been several weeks, which would have given him time to go round the entire female population.”
Staff members also noted how he looked noticeably thinner after his time in the pen, a clear sign of just how active he had been. Once caught, Randy was returned to the male enclosure, where he rejoined his friends. Workers joked that he would no doubt have “a lot of bragging to do.”
But the story doesn’t end with Randy’s adventure. The park now had to prepare for the massive baby boom he caused. Plans were even made to extend the guinea pig farm to handle the huge number of new arrivals. Without better separation, they warned, there could be even more “Randy moments” in the future.
What started as a mystery pregnancy problem turned into a viral story that spread far beyond Warwickshire. After all, it isn’t every day that a guinea pig sneaks his way into the history books as the father of hundreds.
