A Qantas flight diverted to Tahiti after a passenger allegedly turned violent on the way to Texas.
Qantas Flight QF21 was traveling from Melbourne, Australia, to Dallas-Fort Worth when the crew reported a disruptive passenger on board. The flight left Melbourne on Friday, May 15, 2026, before making an unscheduled stop in Papeete, French Polynesia, according to ABC News Australia.
The airline confirmed that the aircraft diverted because of the passenger’s behavior. Qantas also said the passenger has been banned from its flights, including Qantas Group flights such as Jetstar, according to 9News Australia.
Passenger Removed After Emergency Stop in Tahiti
The flight was about seven hours into its long trip to Dallas when the plane diverted to Fa’a’a International Airport in Papeete. Local authorities met the aircraft after it landed and removed the passenger from the plane.
Qantas said safety drove the decision to divert. “The safety of our customers and our crew is our number one priority,” a Qantas spokesperson told 9News. “We have zero tolerance for disruptive or threatening behaviour on our flights.”
ABC News reported that the passenger allegedly bit a flight attendant. The outlet also said fellow passengers helped the crew restrain the person before the aircraft landed in Tahiti.
Video Shows Chaotic Scene Inside the Cabin
Video posted on Instagram by comedian Mike Goldstein, who said he was on the flight, showed a tense scene inside the cabin. The footage showed a man arguing with crew members after coming out of an aircraft bathroom.
The video did not show the alleged biting. It did show the passenger stumbling, swearing, and arguing with crew members and other passengers, according to 9News.
In the footage, the man appeared to tell crew members that he was about to go for a cigarette. A crew member warned him that children were nearby and told him he needed to behave because he was on a plane.
The clip later showed police boarding the aircraft in Tahiti. The man appeared to be restrained on the aisle floor as authorities moved in.
Flight Continued to Dallas After Refueling
After the passenger was removed, the aircraft refueled and continued toward Dallas-Fort Worth. Qantas said the remaining passengers arrived in Dallas on Saturday morning Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Flight tracking and local reports said the diversion delayed the trip by several hours. The aircraft later departed Dallas for Melbourne after the disrupted inbound journey.
9News reported that the passenger involved was from New Zealand and was not an Australian national. Authorities have not publicly released the passenger’s name.
Unruly Passenger Cases Remain a Major Aviation Concern
The incident adds to wider concern over dangerous passenger behavior on flights. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration says interfering with crew duties can violate federal law, and unruly passengers can face fines, travel restrictions, or criminal prosecution in serious cases, according to the FAA.
The FAA says it can propose fines of up to $43,658 per violation in unruly passenger cases. One incident can lead to multiple violations.
For airlines, even one disruptive passenger can force a costly diversion, delay hundreds of travelers, and put crew members under serious stress.
