A disturbing video has sparked outrage in Chicago after a pregnant mother and her nine year old son were beaten by a group of school aged children near Orville Bright Elementary School on Monday. The mother, identified as 33 year old Carshawnda Hatter, was walking home with her two children when the attack began.
Video shows brutal assault
Footage shared online shows several children surrounding Hatter and her son while yelling insults and encouraging each other to attack. The young boy can be seen clinging to his mother as the group punched them and slammed them to the ground.
One child wearing a yellow sweatshirt appeared to kick Hatter in the face while others continued hitting her. The video also shows someone ripping off her wig while she tried to shield her son. The attack continued until both victims were left on the ground.
Hatter later livestreamed from Trinity Hospital, where she and her son were treated for injuries. She stated her children were physically stable but confirmed she required emergency care due to her pregnancy and an existing medical condition. Hatter said she receives treatment for sickle cell anemia, a serious autoimmune disorder recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mother says bullying had been ongoing
Speaking to local reporters, Hatter said the group had been waiting near the sidewalk and followed her family before attacking. She also stated her son had been bullied at school for more than two years and claimed school officials did not intervene before this violent incident.
Supporters walking with her chanted “no justice, no peace” outside the school as police escorted her to a meeting with school administrators on Tuesday.
School district and city leaders respond
Chicago Public Schools released a statement calling the video “horrifying” and confirmed they are coordinating with city departments, including the Chicago Police Department. A CPS spokesperson told FOX 32 Chicago the district is helping the family and reviewing the incident.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also condemned the attack in a statement shared with multiple media outlets including WGN9. He said the video was “deeply disturbing” and confirmed city agencies deployed additional resources to support the family and maintain safety.
No arrests yet as investigation continues
The Chicago Police Department confirmed the investigation is ongoing. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made. Authorities have not confirmed what motivated the attack.
The assault has quickly gained national attention as debates grow regarding youth violence, school safety, and accountability. Hatter says her priority now is justice and protection for her children.
“I’m trying to get justice for my son,” she told reporters. “Nobody deserves this.”
