A Tennessee police officer is in critical condition after his motorcycle collided with a state trooper’s vehicle while escorting Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade on Friday. The crash took place in Maryville, just outside Knoxville, around 6:11 p.m., according to local authorities.
The officer has been identified as Justin Brown of the Maryville Police Department. Police say he was providing security detail for the vice president when the collision happened. The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed that one of its marked SUVs was involved in the crash, but the cause is still under investigation. Bystanders Rushed to Save Him
Witnesses nearby ran to help Brown immediately after the impact. Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said their actions likely saved his life. “We could never thank you enough. You are true heroes,” the chief said in a statement.
Brown was flown by helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Hospital officials confirmed he underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. According to information shared by the department, Brown has begun to make small improvements and will likely remain hospitalized for a long recovery. Messages of support have come from across the state. Chief Crisp said his department has received hundreds of calls and emails from community members, law enforcement agencies, and first responders.
Brown is also well known in his local fitness community. His CrossFit group shared a public message saying, “We ask that you keep this family close to your heart.”
Motorcade Was En Route to Fundraising Event
JD Vance’s office confirmed the vice president was in Tennessee for a fundraising event held at Blackberry Farm in Walland. He had landed at McGhee Tyson Airport shortly before the crash.
A spokesperson for JD Vance said his team is waiting on the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s investigation and continues to monitor Brown’s condition. “The injuries sustained are significant and he has a long road ahead. Our thoughts remain with him, his family and the Maryville Police Department,” the spokesperson said.
Investigation Ongoing
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says the trooper driving the SUV was evaluated on scene and did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported. Officials have not yet released details about the cause of the collision as the investigation continues.
Chief Crisp added that the department is focused on supporting Brown and his family during recovery. “His progress is expected to be gradual, but we remain grateful for every improvement,” he said.
