Last Friday, a video captured an extraordinary sight off California’s coast. A super pod of over 3,000 dolphins, including a rarely seen species, swimming together in Monterey Bay.
This rare video reveals a group of dolphins, some of them northern right whale dolphins, known for their elusive nature. The super pod was filmed by boat captain and videographer Evan Brodsky, who was conducting research with his crew.
Brodsky and his colleagues followed a group of dolphins spotted 18 kilometers from the shore. The gathering of thousands of dolphins shocked them. Especially after seeing the elusive northern right whale dolphins among the super pod.
These dolphins typically swim in deeper waters. Therefore, this sighting near the coast marks itself as a rare and spectacular event.
Brodsky described their appearance as “flying eyebrows” when they leaped from the water, highlighting their unique, smooth, and finless bodies, unlike most dolphins.
“They’re all smooth. When they jump, they look like flying eyebrows. We were so excited it was hard to hold in our emotions. We had the biggest grins from ear to ear”
Brodsky said and joked.
This massive super pod’s formation is not just an unusual event—it also has broader implications for understanding dolphin behavior.
According to marine biologist Colleen Talty from Monterey Bay Whale Watch, these dolphins could have gathered to fend off predators, socialize, or even feed on the same food.
These dolphins are known for their highly social nature and often mix with other species, like Pacific white-sided dolphins.
The groups of northern right whale dolphins are often small, ranging from 100 to 200 individuals. This massive gathering is truly awe-inspiring, with up to 3,000 individuals reported in previous sightings.
