Authorities gave a grim update Sunday in the case of missing California baby Emmanuel Haro, as cadaver dogs searched along a freeway but failed to locate the infant. The search has now stretched into its second week, with investigators intensifying efforts near Moreno Valley.
Freeway Search Brings No Answers
On August 24, deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office combed parts of the 60 Freeway near Gilman Springs Road. Officials confirmed that cadaver dogs were deployed but Emmanuel, reported missing on August 14, was not found. Investigators wrapped up the search Sunday night, leaving the baby’s fate still unknown.
Witnesses spotted Emmanuel’s father, Jake Haro, in an orange jumpsuit at the search site, escorted by detectives. Authorities did not disclose details about his involvement at the location but confirmed he remains in custody.
Parents Arrested in Case
Both parents, Jake and Rebecca Haro, were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of murder. The arrests followed a search of their home in Cabazon, a Riverside County community about 20 miles from Palm Springs. Investigators have said there are significant inconsistencies in the parents’ accounts of what happened to Emmanuel.
Rebecca Haro initially told police she was attacked in a Big 5 sporting goods store parking lot in Yucaipa while changing her baby’s diaper. She claimed an unknown assailant knocked her down and took the child. Authorities later disputed that version of events, citing contradictions and a lack of evidence to support her story.
Community Awaits Answers
Ten days after Emmanuel was first reported missing, no trace of the baby has been found. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Sunday confirming the case remains open and active. “As of 4 p.m., Emmanuel has not been located,” officials said, noting they continue to work with multiple agencies in the search.
The arrests of Emmanuel’s parents have only deepened public concern. “It’s heartbreaking. We just want the truth about what happened to this baby,” one Moreno Valley resident told The Los Angeles Times. The case has gained national attention as investigators pursue leads and await forensic results.
