When geologists visited Yellowstone National Park’s Norris Geyser Basin in April 2025 to check temperature logging stations, they didn’t expect to find something new. But tucked inside the Porcelain Basin—near a spot known as Tree Island—they noticed something they hadn’t seen the last time they were there in the fall of 2024: a gaping hole filled with pale blue water.
This was no ordinary puddle. The hole was roughly 13 feet wide and about a foot deep below its rim. The water inside was a light, milky blue, and the temperature read 109°F. Around the edge of the hole were scattered rocks—each about a foot across—coated in light gray, sandy mud. All signs pointed to something Yellowstone is known for, but rarely shows in real time: a hydrothermal explosion.
Hydrothermal explosions happen when underground water suddenly turns to steam, builds pressure, and bursts through the surface, throwing rocks and mud into the air. These events are linked to Yellowstone’s supervolcano system—one of the most powerful on Earth. But this time, the explosion didn’t happen all at once. Satellite images show no signs of a hole on December 19, 2024.
By January 6, 2025, a shallow depression had formed. Then by February 13, it had fully filled with water. Geologists believe this blue spring formed through multiple small explosions, each tossing up a bit of rock and silica-rich mud, slowly shaping the hole into the pool we see now.
This gradual process is actually a good sign. Unlike a single massive blast, which can signal deeper problems underground, these mild events suggest surface-level shifts. Michael Poland from USGS and Jeff Hungerford, a Yellowstone park geologist, explained that there was no sign of a major explosion—no strong signal from their monitoring equipment. That equipment was installed in 2023 to keep track of geothermal changes like this. Their conclusion? The hole likely started forming around December 25, with continued activity into early February.
The Porcelain Basin is known to be Yellowstone’s most active geothermal area, and this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Just last year, in April 2024, a small hydrothermal blast created a crater a few feet wide in the same area. In July 2024, another explosion caused a hole to appear in Biscuit Basin, near Old Faithful. But those earlier ones likely happened in a single burst. This new spring is different—not just because of its beauty, but because of how it formed in quiet, gradual steps.
Despite how inviting the blue water might look, swimming is strictly off-limits. The National Park Service warns that most hot springs in Yellowstone are either scalding hot or filled with chemicals that can damage skin. The few legal swimming spots in the park are carefully chosen and closely monitored. In contrast, the water in geothermal features like this one can reach boiling temperatures and easily cause injury or even death.
The discovery of the new blue water spring reminds us just how alive Yellowstone really is. Beneath its forests and trails lies a vast volcanic system, full of heat, pressure, and change. And sometimes, that system bubbles up in ways we can see—like a glowing blue spring where there used to be just plain ground.
