The Syracuse Figure photos show an unidentified figure wading through a remote marsh in upstate New York.
A 25-year-old hiker photographed the distant figure near a glacial pond in rural Onondaga County on Aug. 10. Bigfoot researchers have suggested it could be a juvenile Sasquatch, while skeptics believe the images likely show a person in the water.
No physical evidence has connected the figure to an unknown animal, and its identity remains unverified.
Hiker Initially Thought She Saw a Naked Man
The witness, publicly identified only by the initials K.D., said she arrived at the undisclosed hiking area at about 1 p.m. The parking lot appeared empty when she began walking toward the pond.
She was photographing the landscape when she noticed movement about 240 feet away. K.D. initially believed she was looking at a naked man wading near the pond’s edge.
After she took several pictures, the figure appeared to turn its head and look toward her. The movement made her uncomfortable, and she began leaving the area.
“It really looked inhuman,” K.D. later told the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, commonly known as BFRO.
The witness submitted her account on Aug. 17. The organization published the report as BFRO Report 82485.
Photos Taken From About 240 Feet Away
The two published images show a hunched figure standing in shallow water near tall grass. The figure looks downward in one photograph and toward the camera in another.
Grass partly blocks the view, and the distance limits the amount of reliable visual detail. Enlarging a distant digital photograph can also create shapes and apparent features that were not clearly captured by the original pixels.
K.D. reportedly used an iPhone 17. However, neither the phone model nor the presence of multiple images confirms what the subject was.
The organization has withheld the pond’s exact location. BFRO said the decision protects the site and would allow a person who was actually there to identify it privately.
Investigator Attempted to Recreate Images
BFRO investigator Ben C. later visited the site and attempted to stand where the unidentified figure appeared in the photographs.
He said it took between 10 and 15 minutes to move through roots, debris and areas of waist-deep mud. He also reported receiving scratches while reaching the location.
The difficult terrain led him to question why a barefoot or unclothed person would enter that section of the pond. Signs at the site reportedly prohibit swimming and wading.
Using his own 6-foot height for comparison, Ben estimated that the photographed figure stood about 4 feet 9 inches tall.
That estimate is not a confirmed measurement. The figure’s posture, water depth, camera angle, distance and whether the investigator reproduced the exact location could all affect the calculation.
BFRO Suggests Juvenile Sasquatch Theory
Ben said he could see what appeared to be a pronounced brow ridge and suggested the figure might be a juvenile Sasquatch.
BFRO investigator Matthew Moneymaker offered another interpretation of the figure’s appearance. He proposed that areas resembling loose skin might instead be wet fur lying flat against the body.
The organization began calling the subject the “Syracuse Figure” because the photographs were taken in Onondaga County, the same county as Syracuse, and in a marshy environment.
BFRO also referred to separate reports of smaller Bigfoot-like figures in Pennsylvania. Those accounts do not independently verify the New York photographs or establish that the sightings are connected.
Gray News reported that BFRO continues to investigate the photographs and remains open to the possibility that the subject was human.
Skeptics See a More Ordinary Explanation
Many online viewers have said the images appear to show an older or heavyset person wading or skinny-dipping.
A person remains a plausible explanation. Adults vary widely in height and body shape, and someone familiar with the location might have been capable of crossing its difficult terrain.
The fact that the parking area appeared empty also does not rule out a human. A visitor could have walked from another location, used a bicycle, entered from a different path or arrived before the witness.
Other possibilities include an animal seen from a misleading angle or a visual misinterpretation caused by distance, vegetation and the figure’s position in the water.
No Evidence Confirms a Bigfoot Identification
The photographs do not include a clear face, biological sample, footprint with documented provenance or other independently testable evidence.
No recognized North American primate matching popular descriptions of Bigfoot has been scientifically documented.
The Smithsonian Institution has said its official position is that Bigfoot does not exist and that it holds no Bigfoot specimens in its scientific collections.
Historical evidence submitted as possible proof has also produced ordinary explanations. In 1977, the FBI examined hairs associated with a Bigfoot inquiry and concluded that they came from an animal in the deer family, according to the bureau’s released Bigfoot file.
The Syracuse photographs establish that K.D. captured an unidentified distant figure in a pond. They do not establish whether it was a person, a known animal or something else.
Unless the subject comes forward or investigators obtain verifiable physical evidence, the identity of the “Syracuse Figure” will remain unresolved.
