The Visalia MMA brawl involved about 100 people and brought 26 police units to a California convention center.
Police arrested 15 people after violence erupted during the 559 Fights Next Gen 4 mixed martial arts event in Visalia, California, on Saturday, Aug. 22.
Three Visalia Police Department officers suffered minor injuries while trying to control the crowd. Authorities said the officers were expected to recover.
Video Shows Crowd Rushing Into Brawl
Video recorded inside the Visalia Convention Center shows a large crowd gathering near the center of the venue as the disturbance spreads.
Some attendees appear to rush toward the conflict while others remain farther away and record the scene with their phones. Security personnel can be seen entering the crowd and attempting to separate people.
Police officers were already assigned to work at the event when the fighting began. However, the number of people involved forced them to request substantial backup, according to the Visalia Police Department.
Police estimated that about 100 people participated in the initial brawl. Several smaller fights then reportedly broke out in other parts of the convention center.
Dozens of Police Units Responded
The Visalia Police Department sent 26 units to the convention center as officers worked to stop the fights and remove the crowd.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and police departments from Farmersville and Exeter also assisted with the response.
Authorities eventually brought the venue under control and cleared the remaining crowd. Officials have not publicly stated how long the disturbance lasted or what caused the initial fight.
ABC30 Central California reported that the three injured Visalia officers suffered minor injuries while attempting to control the disturbance.
Fifteen People Arrested
Police arrested 15 people following the brawl. All 15 were booked into the Tulare County Adult Pre-Trial Detention Facility on various charges, authorities said.
Officials did not immediately release the names of those arrested or provide a complete list of the alleged offenses.
An arrest does not establish guilt. Any criminal charges resulting from the disturbance must be resolved through the court system.
The Visalia Police Department publishes public booking information through its official arrest log page. Additional details about the individual cases may become available there.
Brawl Erupted During Amateur MMA Event
The disturbance occurred during 559 Fights 126, also promoted as Next Gen 4. The event featured amateur mixed martial arts competitors from California’s Central Valley.
According to the official 559 Fights website, the event was sanctioned by CAMO MMA and was advertised as open to attendees of all ages.
The promotion was established in 2012 and says it has organized more than 125 events. Several fighters who competed through the organization later appeared in major professional competitions, including the UFC.
Officials have not said whether any scheduled fights were completed after the disturbance or whether the incident will affect future events at the convention center.
Questions Remain About What Started the Violence
Police have not publicly identified the event that triggered the first fight. It also remains unclear whether the people arrested were connected to one group or several separate disputes.
Investigators may review security recordings and videos captured by spectators to determine how the brawl began and identify other participants.
The unusually large response, including 26 Visalia police units and three assisting agencies, shows how quickly the disturbance overwhelmed the officers and security personnel initially stationed at the event.
Authorities had not announced additional arrests as of Monday, Aug. 24. The investigation remained active, and further charges could be filed if police identify more alleged participants.
