Kuwait Activates Air Defenses as U.S. Launches New Iran Strikes Near Strait of Hormuz

Kuwait air defenses were activated Thursday as new U.S. strikes in Iran pushed the region closer to crisis.

Kuwait said its air defense systems responded to “hostile missile and drone threats” on Thursday, adding a new danger point to the fast moving U.S. Iran conflict near the Strait of Hormuz.

The Kuwaiti Armed Forces said residents may have heard explosions because air defense systems were intercepting incoming threats. The military did not publicly identify where the missiles or drones came from.

The alert came hours after U.S. forces carried out new strikes in Iran. A U.S. official told Reuters that the strikes targeted a military site and Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Says Strikes Targeted a Threat Near Hormuz

U.S. officials described the latest strikes as defensive. Reuters reported that American forces shot down four Iranian one way attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz and hit a ground control station in Bandar Abbas that was believed to be preparing another drone launch.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping lanes. Oil and gas tankers use the narrow waterway to move energy from the Persian Gulf to global markets.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration has called the Strait of Hormuz the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint. Its overview is available through the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The new U.S. action came while Washington and Tehran were still discussing a possible diplomatic path. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. would give talks with Iran “every chance to succeed,” but he also said President Donald Trump has other options if diplomacy fails.

Iran Claims Retaliation After U.S. Attack

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it targeted a U.S. air base after a U.S. attack near Bandar Abbas airport, according to Iran’s state linked Tasnim news agency.

The IRGC warned that if the attack is repeated, its response would be more decisive. Iranian officials did not immediately provide full evidence for the claimed strike.

The Associated Press reported that Kuwait announced hostile missile and drone activity shortly after the U.S. strikes and Iran’s retaliation claim. AP also noted that no group had immediately claimed responsibility for the threats facing Kuwait. The report is available through The Associated Press.

The sequence has left Gulf governments on high alert. Kuwait hosts important regional security infrastructure and has faced repeated air defense alerts during the wider Iran conflict.

New U.S. Sanctions Target Iran’s Strait Authority

The military escalation came one day after the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions against Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority.

The Treasury Department said the authority was being used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to collect fees and pressure vessels moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Treasury warned that companies cooperating with the authority could face sanctions risk.

“Anyone cooperating with the so called strait authority may be providing support to and receiving services from the IRGC,” Treasury said in its official statement.

The full sanctions announcement is posted on the U.S. Department of the Treasury website.

Oil Prices Rise as Region Watches for Wider War

Oil prices climbed after news of the new strikes and air defense activity. Reports showed both Brent crude and U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures rising as traders watched the risk to shipping in the Gulf.

That reaction shows why Hormuz remains so sensitive. Even a limited clash near the waterway can raise fears about oil supply, tanker safety, and global prices.

For the White House, the challenge is now twofold. Trump wants a deal with Iran, but U.S. forces are still responding to threats that officials say could endanger American personnel and commercial shipping.

For Iran, the issue is also high stakes. Tehran wants sanctions relief and more control over regional shipping, but new U.S. strikes and sanctions are increasing pressure on the government.

Diplomacy Continues Under Fire

Rubio said the administration still wants diplomacy to work. His comments came during a Cabinet meeting where he said talks with Iran had made some progress.

But the military action shows how fragile the talks remain. U.S. forces are still striking Iranian targets. Iran is still threatening retaliation. Kuwait and other Gulf states are still watching the sky for incoming threats.

No confirmed deal has been announced. No clear blame has been publicly assigned for the threats Kuwait reported Thursday.

For now, the region is caught between two paths. One leads toward a negotiated settlement over Hormuz, sanctions, and Iran’s military activity. The other risks a wider fight that could pull in U.S. forces, Gulf states, and global energy markets.

Thursday’s air defense alert in Kuwait showed how quickly that risk can spread beyond Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Even as diplomats talk, the region remains one mistake away from a much larger crisis.
