This new species is officially known as ‘Clavelina ossipandae.’ However, its admirers are calling it the ‘Skeleton Panda Sea Squirt.‘ The calm waters surrounding the Japanese island of Kumejima have revealed this adorable and mysterious resident. Measuring up to a mere 2 centimeters, the Panda-Like Sea Creature first captured the hearts of many. Its unique visual has a wide appeal across social media. This intrigue reached the scientific community, and many conducted research efforts to understand more about this creature.

The Skeleton Panda Sea Squirt was termed by netizens of Japan. This undersea creature has fascinated divers and researchers who have come to Kumejima Island. Naohiro Hasegawa from Hokkaido University conducted extensive research. He was ultimately involved in collecting specimens and conducting extensive morphological and DNA analysis.

As stated in the recent publication of their findings, the researchers explain, “The white parts that look like bones are the blood vessels that run horizontally through the sea squirts’ gills.” They further expanded on the mysterious patterning, “The black parts on the head that look like a panda’s eyes and nose are just a pattern, and we don’t really know why the pattern is there.”

Awarding the scientific name Clavelina ossipandae, researchers have cleverly enclosed the fascinating features of this organism. ‘Clavelina’ draws from the bottle shape and it is a characteristic of its genus. while ‘Ossi’, the Latin term for ‘bone’, perfectly encapsulates the skeletal pattern made by its noticeable white blood vessels. ‘Pandae’ pays tribute to the black spots adorning its ‘face.’ These markings make it so much similar to the eye and nose of a panda.
