As stated in the recent publication of their findings, the researchers explain, “The white parts that look like bones are the blood vessels that run horizontally through the sea squirts’ gills.” They further expanded on the mysterious patterning, “The black parts on the head that look like a panda’s eyes and nose are just a pattern, and we don’t really know why the pattern is there.”

Awarding the scientific name Clavelina ossipandae, researchers have cleverly enclosed the fascinating features of this organism. ‘Clavelina’ draws from the bottle shape and it is a characteristic of its genus. while ‘Ossi’, the Latin term for ‘bone’, perfectly encapsulates the skeletal pattern made by its noticeable white blood vessels. ‘Pandae’ pays tribute to the black spots adorning its ‘face.’ These markings make it so much similar to the eye and nose of a panda.
