A terrifying incident unfolded aboard Japan Airlines flight JL8696 on Monday when the Boeing 737 aircraft suddenly plunged nearly 26,000 feet mid-air, prompting chaos among the 191 passengers and crew onboard. The flight, traveling from Shanghai Pudong to Tokyo Narita, was forced to make an emergency landing in Osaka after suffering what officials described as a serious mechanical failure.
Cabin Turns to Chaos After Loud Boom
Multiple passengers reported hearing a “muffled boom” moments before oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling. Flight attendants screamed for passengers to put them on immediately. Many had been asleep and awoke in panic, with some struggling to breathe. Japan’s transport ministry confirmed that the aircraft’s pressurization system triggered an emergency as the plane plunged from 36,000 feet to just over 10,000 in under ten minutes.
“The stewardess cried and shouted to put on the oxygen mask,” one passenger told The People. “Some started writing their wills and goodbye messages.”

The captain declared an emergency, and the aircraft diverted to Osaka’s international airport, where it landed safely at 8:50 p.m. local time. No injuries were reported, but the emotional toll on passengers was significant. Many described the ordeal as the most frightening moment of their lives.
Japan Airlines has issued an apology and provided each passenger with ¥15,000 ($93 USD) along with overnight accommodations. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the malfunction, which comes amid heightened concerns following a recent fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in India.
As investigators work to determine the cause, passengers are left shaken — but grateful to be alive.
