Hurricane Erin has stunned meteorologists by undergoing one of the fastest rapid intensifications ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm jumped from a Category 1 hurricane with 75 mph winds on Friday morning to a Category 5 monster with winds near 160 mph just 24 hours later.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed Saturday that Erin briefly became a rare Category 5 before weakening to a Category 3 on Sunday as it grew in size. Still, with maximum sustained winds near 125 mph and tropical-storm-force winds extending more than 200 miles, Erin remains a formidable threat across the western Atlantic.
A record-breaking storm
Rapid intensification is defined as a hurricane gaining at least 35 mph of wind speed in 24 hours. Erin far exceeded that threshold, placing it among the fastest-strengthening hurricanes in recorded Atlantic history. If verified, it may hold the record for the fastest intensification before September 1.
Erin is now one of only 43 Category 5 storms ever documented in the Atlantic. Strikingly, 11 of those have occurred since 2016, highlighting what scientists say is a troubling new trend. According to the NHC, warmer ocean waters linked to human-driven climate change are fueling more frequent and extreme rapid intensification events.
Impact on the Caribbean and beyond
As of Saturday evening, Erin was about 150 miles northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and 160 miles northwest of Anguilla. Outer rain bands produced heavy rainfall across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, prompting flash flood warnings and raising concerns over landslides and mudslides.
Tropical storm watches remain in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and parts of the Leeward Islands. The NHC warned that dangerous surf and rip currents will affect beaches in the Bahamas, much of the U.S. East Coast, and Atlantic Canada through next week.
Forecast: growing in size
Forecasters expect Erin to undergo an eyewall replacement cycle, which may allow the storm to regain Category 5 strength while doubling or tripling in size. While a direct landfall is unlikely, the storm’s massive wind field is expected to generate hazardous coastal conditions from the Caribbean to North America.
Even if Erin avoids land, its impacts will be widespread. The NHC cautioned that “life-threatening surf and rip currents” will persist along the U.S. East Coast next week, even as the storm tracks northward into the open Atlantic between Bermuda and the United States.
A warning of what’s to come
Erin marks the fourth straight Atlantic hurricane season to feature a Category 5 storm, following hurricanes Beryl and Milton last year. Experts say this reflects how climate change is intensifying storm systems earlier in the season and in areas where they were once rare.
“We are seeing stronger storms, forming faster, and reaching peak intensities more often,” said NOAA researchers in a recent climate assessment. “This is a clear signal of a warming world.”
