When most people think of a mountain rescue dog, the image that often comes to mind is a large, powerful breed like a St. Bernard, stomping through snow with a barrel under its neck. But in the Swiss Alps last Friday, it wasn’t a big dog that came to the rescue. It was a small, long-haired Chihuahua — a tiny dog that turned out to be a big hero.
The incident happened on the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland, near the town of Saas-Fee and close to the Italian border. A man, who has not been publicly named, was hiking across the glacier with his white and brown Chihuahua. At about 3,200 meters above sea level, he stepped onto what’s known as a snow bridge — a thin layer of snow that covers a gap or crevasse in a glacier. The bridge gave way, and he suddenly plunged nearly 8 meters, or about 26 feet, into a hidden crevasse below.
Trapped deep in the glacier ice, the man managed to use a walkie-talkie he was carrying to send out a distress call. Someone nearby picked up the message and alerted emergency services. But there was a problem: no one knew exactly where the man had fallen.
Air Zermatt, a helicopter rescue company that serves the region, dispatched a helicopter and three rescue specialists to search the glacier. But the surface of the glacier was wide, and the hole the man had fallen into was barely visible. The rescue team circled and scanned the ice, but the man was hidden somewhere beneath it.
Then, a key moment changed everything. One of the rescuers spotted a small movement on a rock — a tiny dog was standing there, alone, on the vast icy surface. It was the Chihuahua, perched quietly next to the crevasse. The dog’s position was no accident — it was standing exactly where its owner had fallen through the snow bridge.
The rescue team immediately focused on the spot. Thanks to the dog’s behavior, they were able to identify the hole and begin their rescue. Using ropes and pulleys, they rappelled down into the crevasse, reached the man, and pulled him up to safety. The dog stayed put throughout the entire rescue, closely watching every move the team made.
Once the man was lifted out, both he and his dog were flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital. According to Bruno Kalbermatten, a spokesperson for Air Zermatt, the man may not have survived if his dog hadn’t stayed there and made itself visible to the rescuers.
“Imagine if the dog wasn’t there. I have no idea what would have happened to this guy. I think he wouldn’t survive this fall into the crevasse.”
Kalbermatten said in a phone interview.
Air Zermatt praised the dog as a “four-legged hero who may have saved his master’s life in a life-threatening situation.” Their website described the rescue as “extraordinary.”
Photos from the scene show the dog perched near the crevasse while rescue gear is set up above the hole. Some media outlets, including Germany’s Bild, noted that the dog may actually be a Papillon — a breed that looks similar to a Chihuahua — but Air Zermatt continues to describe it as a Chihuahua.
This incident has drawn attention to the dangers of glacier hiking. Back in March, Air Zermatt had warned hikers about the risks posed by crevasses. Within just two weeks earlier this year, the company reported handling seven glacier rescues. Snow bridges are especially dangerous because they can appear solid but hide deep cracks in the ice beneath.
Historically, large dogs like St. Bernards have been the heroes of Alpine rescues. Over the past 200 years, they’ve been credited with saving thousands of travelers along the snowy St. Bernard Pass. But due to their size, slow pace, and the high cost of care, these dogs have mostly been replaced by modern tools like helicopters and heat sensors.
This time, however, no equipment — not even a helicopter — could have spotted the exact place where the man fell. It was the man’s own dog, standing silently in the snow, that made the difference.
In a world filled with stories of survival, few are as unexpected and moving as this one. A tiny dog, often seen as fragile or decorative, stayed calm and loyal in a dangerous situation — and may have saved a life because of it. Whether Chihuahua or Papillon, this “four-legged hero” has proven that even the smallest companions can play the biggest roles in moments that matter most.
