Zach Skow thought he might be offering Henry only a few comfortable days or weeks. The elderly shelter dog was struggling to walk, and Skow wanted to bring him into a home.
Instead, the foster placement became the beginning of another chapter.
Henry’s story circulated in 2021. He was described as roughly 15 or 16 years old, with cancer and difficulties hearing and seeing.
A foster home with room for an older dog
Skow founded Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue, a California organization established in 2009.
In the account reported by InspireMore in April 2021, Skow recalled a confused dog who did not want to walk when brought out of his kennel.
His initial expectation was that Henry might have little time remaining. That was his impression, rather than a confirmed veterinary prediction.
Care brought an unexpected change
Henry became more alert after settling into the foster home. Over time, he began moving more freely and playing again.
He also received surgery to remove cancerous tissue, according to the published account. The story includes both veterinary treatment and a more comfortable environment; it does not establish that affection alone treated his illness.
Skow described Henry’s increasingly lively gallop around the yard. A dog he had brought home for comfort was showing renewed interest in the world around him.
A family for the next chapter
After about six weeks, the rescue found Henry an adoptive family, InspireMore reported. Skow’s role was as his foster caregiver, helping him reach that next home.
A later retrospective by Scoop Upworthy, citing the adoptive family’s Instagram account, reported that Henry died peacefully with his family on January 6, 2022.
His story is therefore a remembrance, rather than a current adoption appeal. Its lasting value lies in the time he gained: treatment, room to move, and a family beside him.
