Heartbroken Cat Hides Her Face After Family Returns Her To Shelter

In 2020, a 2-year-old cat named Shelly was adopted from NAWS Humane Society. Shelter staff believed she had found her forever home.

Five years later, Shelly’s family returned to the same shelter to surrender her. The reason was outside Shelly’s control, according to staff.

Fran Grzesik, one of the directors at NAWS Humane Society, told The Dodo that Shelly came back in the same adoption box she had left in years earlier.

The change was overwhelming for the now 7-year-old cat. After years in a home, the noise and stress of the shelter left her frightened.

Grzesik said Shelly hid behind her litter box and barely allowed anyone to touch her. When Grzesik picked her up, Shelly buried her face in her arms.

On TikTok, Grzesik wrote that Shelly seemed to want to disappear and go back to her previous life, a life that had been full of love.

Staff gave Shelly time, space and comfort. Slowly, she began to understand that she was safe.

She started accepting pets from Grzesik and eventually began nuzzling against her hand. Grzesik described Shelly as extremely sweet and loving once she trusts someone.

At first, staff worried Shelly might struggle to find a new home because of her age and stress. Instead, people began falling in love with her story and personality.

Within weeks, Shelly had a long list of adoption applicants. NAWS Humane Society reviewed them carefully to find the right match.

Shelly was eventually adopted by a woman named Natalie. In her new home, she began decompressing and receiving the care she needed.

She has also been getting treatment for a weepy eye while enjoying cuddles and a calmer environment.

Shelly’s story touched people because it showed how deeply animals can be affected by sudden change. A return to a shelter can be confusing and frightening for a pet that once knew home life.

Animal welfare groups often urge families to seek help before surrendering a pet when possible.

For Shelly, the story that began with fear ended with a second chance. Thanks to patient shelter staff and a new adopter, she now has another home where she can feel safe again.
