What happened

The jet, operated by Aurora Aviation (doing business as Upper Jets), left Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at about 10:37 a.m. local time, bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

Over South Florida, the crew reported light clear ice and moderate turbulence and asked to climb, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Shortly afterward, the aircraft entered what the NTSB called an overspeed condition and began descending rapidly. The crew made a Mayday call. The co-pilot was heard saying, "We're going to crash into the ground." Reports say the jet passed through a strong storm cell just before the descent and fell tens of thousands of feet in about a minute.

It struck the ground beside South Military Trail, just outside a mobile home community, and erupted in a fireball. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called it "cataclysmic," saying it looked "like a missile going down." It narrowly missed homes. One man in a vehicle nearby suffered a leg injury.

The nine people who died

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office officially identified all nine victims on Wednesday, November 4, after families had confirmed several of them earlier.

  • Jeff Gregory, 55, the pilot, a husband and father from Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania.
  • Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, the co-pilot, from Boca Raton. CNN spoke with her father, who taught her to love flying; friends and family remembered her love of being in the air.
  • Adam Robinson, 45, a tech entrepreneur, and his wife Helen Sharp, 40.
  • Their children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2.
  • Anita Maria Cetina, the family's caregiver.
  • Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, a couple traveling with them.

In a statement, Robinson and Sharp's family said their "warmth, generosity and gift for making people feel welcome touched so many lives." The Diocese of Palm Beach scheduled a memorial Mass for all nine victims.

What the NTSB has found so far

The NTSB sent about 20 investigators. Its findings so far:

  • The aircraft may have been breaking up before impact. Most of the jet's left elevator, a tail control surface that points the nose up or down, was found in three pieces between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from the crash site. Investigators have not said whether losing it caused the dive or whether the forces of the dive tore it off.
  • Weather is a key focus. NTSB board member Tom Chapman said the storm cell the jet flew through is "certainly a key focus of the investigation."
  • Excavation is under way. Crews pumped water from the impact crater and recovered part of one engine. The NTSB has asked anyone who finds debris not to move or keep it.
  • No cause has been determined. The NTSB does not determine a probable cause at the scene. A preliminary report usually follows within weeks, and a final report can take a year or more.

The neighborhood

About 600 people were evacuated from the nearby mobile home community, including residents of 77 homes county officials said were affected, after the crash blocked the entrance and investigators sealed off the area. Evacuees were sheltered at the Greenacres Community Center, and the county declared a state of emergency.
