The Night Jean Hilliard Froze
Jean Hilliard was driving home from an evening with friends when her car skidded off an icy road and landed in a ditch. With temperatures near -30°C, she decided to walk to a friend’s house for help. Dressed only in western boots, a coat, and mittens, she collapsed just outside the home of her friend Wally Nelson.
By morning, Hilliard was found completely frozen. Nelson later recalled in an interview with Minnesota Public Radio, “I thought she was dead. Froze stiffer than a board, but I saw a few bubbles coming out of her nose.”
A Race Against Time
Nelson rushed her to Fosston Hospital, just ten minutes away. Doctors struggled to even insert an IV needle into her arm, as it broke against her frozen skin. Her pulse barely registered at 12 beats per minute, and her body temperature was too low for hospital thermometers to read.
Despite the grim outlook, doctors began carefully warming her body with heating pads. Hours later, something unthinkable happened. Jean stirred back to life, spasming as her body began to thaw. Dr. George Sather told The New York Times, “I can’t explain why she’s alive. She was frozen stiff, literally. It’s a miracle.”

Doctors described her condition as being “just like a piece of meat out of a deep freeze.” Yet, after several hours wrapped in electric pads, Jean slowly revived. She made a full recovery without brain damage or long-term health issues, baffling medical experts worldwide.
