Blanche Monnier, a well-known French socialite was famous for her striking beauty and prestigious social status in the 19th century. Born on March 1, 1849, Blanche was from the conservative and noble Monnier family of Poitiers. Her status and beauty attracted many admirers. However, everything turned grim when she was locked in the attic for 25 years by her own mother and brother. This is all because she fell in love and her mother didn’t approve of her affair. A Love Against Mother’s Approval

Blanche’s story turned tragic in 1876, at the age of 27, when she fell in love with a lawyer. Her lover was considered unsuitable by her mother, Louise Monnier. Despite his charm and intellect, her mother disapproved of the lawyer’s lack of wealth to suit the high-society Monniers. 

Louise argued that her daughter could not marry “a penniless lawyer.” Infuriated by her daughter’s affair, she locked Blanche in the attic of their family home. Louise’s heinous act was also supported by her son Marcel. They both kept their secret in the dark for 25 years. 

Louise and Marcel pretended to mourn Blanche’s disappearance while going on with their daily lives. Blanche’s love interest also died unexpectedly in 1885.

The Discovery: An Anonymous Tip and Police Intervention

The truth about Blanche’s disappearance emerged on May 23, 1901. The Paris Attorney General received an anonymous letter alerting him regarding Blanche. The letter described the horrendous conditions in which she had been living: confined in a padlocked, pitch-black room, surrounded by her own filth and decay. 

“Monsieur Attorney General: I have the honor to inform you of an exceptionally serious occurrence. I speak of a spinster who is locked up in Madame Monnier’s house, half-starved and living on a putrid litter for the past twenty-five years – in a word, in her own filth.”

When police arrived at the Monnier residence, they were initially blocked entry. But they insisted on investigating further due to a bad odor coming from upstairs. Breaking into the locked room, they discovered Blanche in unimaginable conditions. She was naked on a rotten straw mattress, severely underweight (weighed around 25 kilograms/55 lb), and surrounded by a crust of waste and rot.

There were also pieces of meat, vegetables, fish, and rotten bread all around the room. They even oyster shells, and bugs running across Blancher’s bed while the air was unbreathable.

The discovery led to an immediate public and legal uproar. Louise Monnier was arrested but surrendered to an illness and died 15 days later. She must have been overwhelmed by the disgrace and public ridicule. 

Marcel. Blanche’s brother also faced trial and was initially convicted. However, he was later acquitted on appeal due to the absence of a legal ‘duty to rescue’ in the penal code at that time. This legal outcome sparked a significant public and media reaction. People struggled to comprehend how such a horror could occur within a respected family.

Blanche’s Life After Rescue

Rescued at the age of 52, Blanche Monnier’s physical and mental health had deteriorated drastically. She was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. All severe impacts of her prolonged isolation and abuse. 

Following her rescue, she lived in a psychiatric hospital in Blois, where she remained until her death on October 13, 1913. Her life post-discovery was also evidence of her resilience.
