A shocking fireball streaked across the Southeastern US on Thursday, igniting curiosity and excitement. The American Meteor Society reported over 140 sightings across six states including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. In northern Georgia, residents felt a quake followed by the unexpected flash in the sky. “Is that meteor debris?” echoed through social media as images of damaged homes surged online.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, it appears that either a meteor or potential space junk blazed across the atmosphere just before 12:30 PM, coinciding with reports of an earthquake in the area.
“That earthquake you felt was the result of the sonic boom from the meteor or space junk,” the NWS confirmed.
Influencers and local news outlets took to Twitter to share their astonishment, with many users saying this was a more than bizarre day. One Twitter user exclaimed, “Only in Georgia! Can’t believe I almost missed this!”
