Chris Arsenault, known by many as the “Long Island Cat Man,” dedicated his life to rescuing and caring for hundreds of cats through his Happy Cat Sanctuary in Medford, New York. Tragically, a fire erupted at his sanctuary on a quiet Monday morning, claiming the lives of Arsenault and at least 108 of the 300 cats he had been sheltering.
The fire broke out around 7:15 a.m., with neighbors describing a loud explosion before the flames engulfed Arsenault’s property on Dourland Road. By the time firefighters brought the blaze under control at 8:35 a.m., the sanctuary had been reduced to rubble.
Chris Arsenault’s journey with cats began in 2006, after the heartbreaking loss of his 24-year-old son, Eric, in a motorcycle accident. During his darkest days, he discovered a colony of 30 sickly cats near the train tracks close to his home.
Caring for them gave him a purpose and slowly helped him heal. Over the years, his home became a sanctuary for hundreds of cats, providing them with everything from heated perches to hammocks. Arsenault would often serve roast chicken dinners to the cats, ensuring they were well-fed and loved.
Despite his dedication, some neighbors complained about the sanctuary. During the summer, the smell became a frequent issue for those living nearby. Others pointed out potential hazards, such as propane tanks kept in the front yard.
These factors, along with online harassment campaigns accusing him of keeping cats in unsafe conditions, created friction within the community. Yet, Arsenault remained committed to his cause, caring for cats that most people would have given up on.
The aftermath of the fire has left the community both devastated and mobilized. Volunteers and organizations like Strong Island Animal Rescue are working tirelessly to locate and rescue the nearly 200 surviving cats.
They are receiving emergency care at facilities like the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, where veterinarians are triaging and treating a wide range of injuries. Paws of War, another nonprofit, has also stepped in to provide a mobile medical van to assist with the rescue effort.
The cost of rescuing and caring for the surviving cats is staggering, with estimates of around $400 per cat. Every dollar comes from donations and volunteer work, highlighting the community’s immense support for Arsenault’s cause.
Lisa Jaeger, a board member of the Happy Cat Sanctuary, described the ongoing rescue operation as the largest and most chaotic effort she has ever been involved in.
A warehouse donated by a Good Samaritan will serve as a temporary shelter for the surviving cats. Volunteers will continue their rescue efforts over the next two weeks, moving the cats from the charred remains of Arsenault’s property to safer accommodations.
Despite the overwhelming grief, rescuers like Frankie Floridia of Strong Island Animal Rescue are determined to honor Arsenault’s legacy by doing everything possible to save his beloved animals.
Arsenault’s dream of expanding his sanctuary had already begun before the tragedy. He had been building a new, larger facility upstate. However, moving the injured cats to the new site isn’t feasible at the moment.
Floridia, who worked closely with Arsenault, expressed his commitment to honoring the sanctuary founder’s memory.
“Chris died saving animals. That’s what he loved to do. So I’m trying to honor him, to do the best I can to make sure his animals are safe.”
Floridia said.
But beneath the sorrow and resolve, suspicion lingers. Some locals believe the fire was no accident. Cheryl Whitmore, a neighbor of over 20 years, hinted at foul play.
“There were a lot of complaints about him with the cats. He had propane tanks in the front yard for how long, and all of a sudden now this happens? I just feel in my heart and in my gut that there was foul play.”
Whitmore said.
Others, like neighbor Nelly Mendoza, mentioned Arsenault had faced harassment online, which led him to consider moving his sanctuary upstate.
Adding to the suspicion are reports that Arsenault had been the target of coordinated harassment campaigns. Friend and animal activist John DeBacker noted that many accusations made against Arsenault were unfounded.
“He was doing the best that he could and getting a lot of hate for it — cats that no one else wanted.”
DeBacker said.
For now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, with police considering both arson and homicide as possible explanations. The loss of Chris Arsenault and so many of his cherished cats has left a deep wound in the community.
Yet, his legacy continues through the tireless efforts of volunteers and supporters who are determined to rescue the remaining cats and keep the sanctuary’s spirit alive.
