Surgeon’s Words Bring Comfort
Speaking to mourners, Erika described the moment she saw her husband after the attack. “I looked directly at my husband’s murdered body. I saw the wound that ended his life, but there was something else. Even in death, I could see the man that I love,” she said.
She shared that the attending surgeon assured her Charlie did not suffer. “I also saw on his lips the faintest smile. And that told me something important. It revealed to me a great mercy from God in this tragedy. When I saw that, it told me Charlie didn’t suffer. Even the doctor told me—it was something so instant,” Erika said.

Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet addressed public speculation about the shooting. He said the surgeon was surprised that the bullet never exited Charlie’s body, calling it “another miracle.” According to Kolvet, the surgeon explained that a high-powered round like the one used would typically pass through an elk or moose, yet it stopped inside Charlie.
Kolvet added that the surgeon found the lack of an exit wound extraordinary, noting that such bullets “always just go through everything.” He suggested this detail brought further significance to Charlie’s final moments.
