An off-duty Harris County deputy shot and killed 27-year-old Darrius Williams after the man tried to enter his vehicle with his baby strapped in the back seat. Fearing for his child’s safety, the deputy fired multiple rounds when Williams opened the door despite commands to stop.
The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. on Treewood Drive. The deputy had just secured his infant when Williams approached. Williams, who lived nearby but wasn’t known to the deputy, struggled with schizoaffective disorder and had been released from psychiatric care days earlier.
“The mental health system is set up for failure. It is not helpful to the patient, nor is it helpful to caregivers,” said Tieneeshia Williams, the victim’s mother.
Tieneeshia Williams shared her desperate attempts to get help for her son, notifying authorities of his agitation and erratic behavior, but felt the system offered no real support.
