More than 1,300 people have died across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia after days of heavy monsoon rains triggered catastrophic floods and landslides. Emergency crews are scrambling to reach isolated areas while more than 800 people remain missing.
The combined death toll reached at least 1,306 on Tuesday. Indonesia reported 712 deaths, Sri Lanka 410, Thailand 181, and Malaysia three. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the full number of victims is still unknown and likely far higher than early estimates. Indonesia faces the worst devastation
Indonesia has been the hardest hit. Entire villages in North Sumatra were washed away after landslides carried massive volumes of felled timber through communities. Roads have vanished, bridges have collapsed, and rescuers are relying on helicopters and boats to reach stranded families.
Officials say at least 507 people are still missing. Environmental activists warn that illegal logging and rapid development weakened the region’s natural defenses. “This is not just a natural disaster, it’s a manmade crisis,” said Rianda Purba of the Indonesian Environmental Forum.
Survivors are still searching for loved ones. One father in Agam district described clinging to a tree overnight with his daughter after rising water swept away his home. His wife and two young children remain missing.
Sri Lanka calls the disaster its worst in recent memory
Sri Lanka is facing one of the deadliest disasters in its modern history. The Disaster Management Center says 336 people are still unaccounted for following the impact of Cyclone Ditwah. Landslides have blocked major roads, cutting off villages from rescue teams.
In the city of Kandy, residents are living without running water and are relying on natural springs. President Dissanayake warned that the country still does not know the full scale of destruction and said the death toll is expected to rise. Some survivors have lost entire families. One resident of Sarasavigama said he lost his mother, wife, and two children. Another man described losing his wife, daughter, and home, leaving him with only his sons.
Thailand begins cleanup as millions affected
Thailand reported 181 deaths and widespread damage affecting more than 3.9 million people. The southern province of Songkhla has begun cleanup efforts as authorities work to repair roads, restore water systems, and reestablish electricity for communities.
The government announced compensation payments for affected residents and is opening public kitchens to provide food. Officials say more rain could delay recovery.
Malaysia also impacted
Malaysia reported three deaths and thousands of evacuees as floods submerged parts of Perlis state. More than 6,000 people sought shelter in emergency centers as rivers overflowed and streets turned to waterways.
