Daria Serkov, 15, died after a truck struck the Citi Bike she shared with another teenager in Manhattan.
The collision happened around 9 p.m. Friday, September 18, at East 14th Street and First Avenue in the East Village, according to police accounts reported by ABC7 New York.
Emergency crews took both teenagers to Bellevue Hospital, where Serkov was pronounced dead. The other girl, identified in updated reporting as 16, was last listed in stable condition.
Police Investigate Turning Truck
Police said the commercial truck was traveling west on East 14th Street when its driver attempted a right turn onto First Avenue and struck the teenagers.
The 57-year-old driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, ABC7 reported.
CBS New York reported September 19 that the investigation remained ongoing and no charges had been filed.
Community Remembers Daria
Friends, relatives and neighbors gathered at the intersection for a vigil following Serkov’s death. Candles and flowers marked the location where the collision occurred.
Family friend Christine Janssen described Serkov as an energetic, determined teenager. She said she had been spending the evening with Serkov’s parents when they received the news.
Fundraiser Passes $100,000
A fundraiser supporting the Serkov family had collected more than $104,000 from over 800 donations when checked September 21.
Organized by Christine Janssen and Dina Galaktionova, the campaign seeks to cover funeral expenses and support the family, including Daria’s twin sister.
The organizers acknowledged that financial help cannot undo the loss, but said friends and neighbors want to ease the family’s burden.
“It takes a village of friends, family and neighbors to lift them up any way we can,” the fundraiser reads.
