“She was more than a public servant, she was a light in our community,” the city said. “Her leadership was grounded in compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to others.”
City Commissioner Joshua Simmons, speaking at a press briefing, called her a close colleague and friend.
“She had such a good heart. She truly cared about people,” Simmons said.
City Manager Catherine Givens described the moment as devastating.
“To say today is a very dark day for us in Coral Springs is an understatement,” Givens said.
A Trailblazing Public Servant Metayer Bowen made history in 2020 when she became the first Black and Haitian American female commissioner in Coral Springs. She was re-elected in 2024 and later appointed vice mayor by fellow commissioners.
Before entering politics, she worked as an environmental scientist. She also served with the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, where she helped respond to major storms including Hurricanes Irma, Michael, and Dorian.
Her work focused on environmental protection and community resilience during natural disasters.
