The chief of the Cleveland Division of Fire has been placed on paid administrative leave after sharing what city officials called an “insensitive” and “incendiary” social media post about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Mayor Justin Bibb announced the decision Tuesday, saying the Facebook post by Chief Anthony P. Luke “crossed the line.” According to Fox 8 News, the now-deleted post included a cartoon of elephants worshiping a golden rifle with one elephant saying, “Bring out the next sacrifice!!” The image referenced the Republican Party symbol of the elephant.
Mayor’s Statement
“This post romanticizes gun violence, a matter far too serious in a city where we mourn too many families every week,” Bibb said in a written statement. “I firmly believe in free speech, and the First Amendment protects every individual’s right to express opinions — even those that are unpopular, provocative, or difficult to hear. But with rights come responsibilities, especially for those who hold positions of public trust and leadership.”
Bibb added that a public safety leader must represent the city’s values of compassion and unity. “Chief Luke’s post was insensitive, incendiary, and did not reflect the values of safety that every public safety leader in this city should embody,” he said.
Background on the Post
The post appeared shortly after Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah in connection with the shooting.
Luke’s Facebook page has since been made private, and city officials have launched an internal investigation. He remains on paid administrative leave while the review continues. The Cleveland Division of Fire has not released further comment.
The incident highlights the balance between free speech rights and the expectations for public officials to maintain trust and uphold community standards, especially in the wake of a national tragedy.
