Casey Sparks was heading home to Alabama when his GPS kept directing him along a road he had not taken on the outward journey. He tried resetting it, then followed the unfamiliar route.
Near Lyerly, Georgia, he saw the glow of a house fire.
What had seemed like an inconvenient journey became an urgent stop to help a family escape.
A warning before the house was lost
According to NBC News reporting carried by NBC Chicago, Sparks, 37, was returning from playing softball in Dalton on October 17, 2026. His GPS had repeatedly directed him onto Georgia State Route 114.
He stopped when he saw the fire.
James Burke later told local station WRCB that he had fallen asleep in his recliner and woke to a stranger warning him that the house was burning.
Officials told NBC News that James and Larita Burke, their 11 adopted children and one grandchild all escaped safely with Sparks’s help. Firefighters were called shortly before midnight and arrived to find the house engulfed in flames.
The family survived, but their home was destroyed.
His son called for help
In a separate interview with WBRC published October 28, Sparks explained that his son, Cayson, stayed in the car and called 911 while he went into the house to alert the occupants.
The father and son had traveled through Chattanooga on their way to Dalton. Returning by another route put them near the Burkes when help was needed.
Sparks credited his faith for bringing him there. He also told WBRC that the connection continued after the emergency: the families were speaking almost daily, including video calls during which the children greeted and thanked them.
He joked that the Burkes had adopted him and Cayson into their family.
The rescue did not undo the loss of the house. But it gave the families a lasting connection after a night that could have ended very differently.
An unfamiliar road brought Sparks to the scene. His decision to stop, and his son’s call for emergency help, turned that encounter into assistance for the people inside.
