LOS ANGELES, CA – A dramatic rescue unfolded on Tuesday morning as Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) crews successfully freed a 36-year-old woman trapped in an underground tunnel in the Westlake neighborhood. Authorities confirmed the rescue was carried out following a six-hour operation that required precise coordination among multiple agencies.
The incident occurred around 8:20 AM when the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, entered a tunnel at a construction site on South Bixel Street. According to the LAFD, she became stuck after venturing into the confined space and was unable to exit on her own.
Local community members played a crucial role by alerting authorities to the woman’s presence in the tunnel. “We heard someone calling for help and immediately called 911,” said a witness.
Emergency responders from LAFD, including members of the Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, were dispatched to the scene. Working in oppressive heat and using specialized equipment, firefighters hoisted the woman out using a harness. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) provided on-site security to ensure public safety during the operation.
Despite the ordeal, the woman was not injured. Emergency Medical Services transported her to a nearby hospital for a routine medical evaluation. Authorities have not disclosed why she entered the tunnel but emphasized that the area, part of a former office complex undergoing demolition, posed significant safety risks.

Following her rescue, authorities confirmed that the woman was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Officials stated that the decision was made due to her unauthorized entry into the restricted construction site, which violated safety protocols and trespassing laws.
LAPD spokespersons emphasized that entering such hazardous areas not only endangers the individual but also places a significant burden on emergency services, diverting resources from other critical incidents.
