In July, the internet discovered a young mother named Nykia Hamilton, a 25-year-old single mom of three from West Columbia, South Carolina. She became known as the “Burger King Mom” after a customer recorded her working completely alone during a busy shift.
The video showed her running from the kitchen to the drive-thru, back to the counter, and then to cleaning duties—all at once. She handled every order and every customer without a break.

The customer filming her was stunned, saying.
That short clip spread quickly online, gaining more than 100,000 views. People praised Hamilton as “America’s hardest-working woman.” Some shared personal stories of her kindness, while others were outraged that she had been left to run an entire restaurant by herself.
“This is a worker who deserves a raise,” one person wrote. Another added, “She needs a tip jar. She shouldn’t have to do this alone.”
But behind the praise, Hamilton was exhausted. She often worked 12-hour shifts, sometimes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., closing the restaurant by herself. On more than one occasion, she had no coworkers because others quit or simply didn’t show up.
“One of my employees just quit on me, and they didn’t have anyone else to come in, so I had to work by myself and close by myself.”
She explained.
Even with all this pressure, Hamilton stayed loyal to her job. She respected her manager, who had given her a chance to work despite her criminal record.
“I wouldn’t have no job because I do have a record, and it is hard to find a job with a record. By the grace of God, she gave me a job. That’s the only reason I stayed.”

But on August 8, Hamilton posted a heartbreaking update. In a tearful TikTok video, she revealed she had been fired. The reason given was “attendance issues.” Hamilton explained she was sometimes late because she had to take care of her children.
“Burger King fired me because I’ve been late because of my kids. My kids come first. Y’all don’t pay for no babysitter or nothing. I’m trying to keep pushing for my kids, but I cannot do this no more.”
she said.
She added that she was battling depression and said, “The devil been on my back. I promise you he won.”
For Hamilton, this wasn’t just about losing a paycheck. She had already spoken about the toll the job took on her personal life.
“I be missing out on my kids’ lives when I work so much. I have to provide for them, but I really don’t have time to spend with them—and it hurts me a lot.”
she told a local news station.
Burger King’s corporate office later confirmed she was no longer employed, but they stressed that no employee should ever be left to run a restaurant alone. “
“No team member should ever be left to run a restaurant alone, even for a short period of time. That’s not how we operate and we’re disappointed that our policy wasn’t followed.”
A spokesperson said.
While the company called her firing an issue of repeated attendance problems, the video of Hamilton’s tearful update struck a nerve with viewers. Many felt the company had celebrated her hard work publicly but failed to protect or support her when it mattered most.
As her story continued to spread, people online urged her to start a GoFundMe.
At first hesitant, Hamilton eventually created one, writing, “I am a 25-year-old single mom of three who works two jobs. I just went viral for working on TikTok. If you wanna contribute, it’s OK. Thank y’all for the support.”
The response was overwhelming. The fundraiser quickly gained traction, and within weeks, donations reached over $86,000. People across the country sent messages of encouragement, thanking her for her dedication and strength.
Still, Hamilton admitted that the viral fame has been difficult. She explained that the sudden attention left her feeling vulnerable at a time when she was already struggling. “I ain’t want no fame, no money, none of this,” she said. “I’m already aggravated, I’m already depressed. I really do everything for my kids.”
