Fraser is preparing to play Rick O'Connell again
Fraser was 30 when the first Mummy movie reached theaters in 1999. Now 57, he has spoken openly about preparing physically for another action-heavy role.
During a May 2026 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fraser said he was doing his best to get his "57-year-old gear in shape" and asked fans to wish him luck. He also teased that the returning cast was getting "the band back together."
ABC Audio reported Fraser's comments and confirmed his return as Rick.
Photos of the actor have since generated conversation online about a possible transformation. However, no detailed training program or specific physical transformation has been publicly verified. What is confirmed is Fraser's own statement that he has been preparing for the role.
Rachel Weisz is returning as Evelyn
Weisz will reprise her role as Egyptologist Evelyn O'Connell, reuniting onscreen with Fraser for the first time in the franchise since The Mummy Returns in 2001.
Fraser appeared in the third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, in 2008, but Weisz did not. Maria Bello played Evelyn in that movie.

John Hannah is also returning as Evelyn's brother, Jonathan Carnahan. The announced cast includes Michael Johnston and Numan Acar, along with returning performers Kevin J. O'Connor and Oded Fehr.
Details about the story and the characters played by the newcomers remain under wraps.
Radio Silence will direct the new adventure
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are best known for Ready or Not, Scream and Scream VI. Their involvement suggests the new film could combine action, supernatural danger and horror, although the filmmakers and studio have not revealed its precise tone.
Coggeshall, whose credits include The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill, wrote the screenplay. Sean Daniel, a producer connected to the previous Mummy films, is returning, while Fraser is among the executive producers.
The title The Book of the Dead recalls the ancient object that helped unleash Imhotep in the 1999 movie, but no official plot description has confirmed how the book will be used in the new story.
A major return after Fraser's Oscar win
Fraser's comeback arrives during a celebrated period in his career. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2023 for his performance in The Whale, then appeared in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.
His return to Rick O'Connell carries a different kind of significance. The character became memorable because Fraser balanced physical adventure with humor, warmth and vulnerability. That combination helped distinguish the 1999 film from a conventional horror reboot and turned it into an enduring audience favorite.
Fraser has said the earlier films succeeded because they were fun and worked as thrill rides rather than straightforward horror. His comments offer a clue about the spirit he hopes the new installment will recapture, even as the actual plot remains secret.
When will the new Mummy movie be released?
The Mummy: The Book of the Dead is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 15, 2027.
There is no trailer yet, and Universal has not released an official story synopsis. Until those details arrive, the confirmed news is already significant: Fraser, Weisz and several familiar cast members are returning under new directors for another Rick and Evelyn O'Connell adventure.
