A mother and daughter died of cancer about 10 hours apart in Brazil, leaving their family grieving two losses.
Cibele Marchis, 28, died September 24 in Mogi Guaçu, in São Paulo state. Her mother, Maria Elisabete Nogueira, 56, died early the following morning at another hospital in the city.
The deaths left Cibele’s father mourning both his wife and his only child, according to relatives. His name has not been published out of respect for his privacy.
Family Describes the Loss
Cibele’s cousin, Rowilson Leandro da Costa, described the painful adjustment facing her father in an interview with G1, reported by PEOPLE.
He said returning to a home without his wife and daughter would be especially difficult.
Both women had been receiving treatment for different cancers. According to the family’s account, Cibele was diagnosed with cancer originating in her adrenal gland in 2024. Her mother received a pancreatic cancer diagnosis about a year later.
Cibele Continued Working and Seeing Friends
A digital marketer and entrepreneur, Cibele shared parts of her treatment experience on social media while continuing to work and spend time with friends.
Her business partner, Eloá Righi, told G1 that Cibele did not want illness to define her. She wanted people to recognize her work, interests and enjoyment of life alongside the cancer she was living with.
In her own posts, Cibele described surgeries, chemotherapy and a lengthy hospital stay following an infection.
Mother and Daughter Were Remembered Together
Relatives said both women had expressed a wish not to be told if the other died while they were still alive.
According to Brazilian outlet Metrópoles, Maria Elisabete was sedated when Cibele died and did not learn of her daughter’s death.
The family received news of Maria Elisabete’s death while relatives were attending Cibele’s wake.
A joint wake and burial took place September 25 at Santo Antônio Municipal Cemetery in Mogi Guaçu, allowing relatives and friends to say goodbye to both women together.
