In 2023, about 40 strangers lifted a 16.5-ton Berlin bus to rescue a trapped teenager. As medics treated him, his damaged phone rang with a call from 'Mama.'

On September 11, 2023, an 18-year-old man ran toward a city bus in Berlin, Germany.

As the bus pulled away from a stop, he stumbled and fell beneath one of its rear wheels.

The driver stopped immediately. But the young man's arm was trapped under the heavy vehicle.

Then something remarkable happened.

About 40 people joined forces to lift the 16.5-ton bus and free him.

And as doctors prepared to take him to the hospital, his damaged phone rang. The caller's name was “Mama.”

A Teenager Fell While Trying to Catch a Bus

The accident happened around 12:40 p.m. on Klosterstraße in Berlin's Spandau district.

According to police, the teenager was running toward a bus on route 135 when he fell for reasons that were initially unclear.

The articulated bus had just begun moving toward Ruhlebener Straße.

The young man ended up beneath a wheel near the rear axle, with his right arm pinned.

The 50-year-old driver stopped as soon as he realized what had happened and began trying to help.

But the vehicle was too heavy for just a few people to move.

A Woman's Cries Brought Strangers Running

A woman who witnessed the accident shouted for help.

Passengers got off the bus. Pedestrians nearby stopped what they were doing.

Workers from a nearby medical center also rushed outside after hearing the commotion.

Some people tried to reach the injured teenager. Others gathered along the side of the bus.

There was no time for a lengthy plan.

The rescuers needed to raise the vehicle just enough to pull the young man out.

Forty People Lifted the 16.5-Ton Bus Together

The bus was a Mercedes-Benz articulated vehicle weighing approximately 16.5 metric tons.

One person could not lift it. Neither could a handful of bystanders.

But as more people arrived, the group began pushing and lifting together.

Around 40 people took part, including passengers, pedestrians, the driver and nearby workers.

They raised and shifted the bus's right side enough to create a small opening.

German reports said the vehicle moved about 20 centimeters.

That was enough.

Other rescuers pulled the teenager from beneath the bus and brought him to safety.

Nearby Doctors and Nurses Rushed to Help

The accident happened close to a medical center, where surgeons and nurses heard the calls for help.

They brought emergency supplies to the scene and began treating the teenager as soon as he was freed.

According to German newspaper B.Z., medical workers gave him fluids and pain relief while waiting for emergency responders.

They wanted to keep him conscious and stable.

The young man had scrapes, bruises and an injury to his right arm.

He was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Later reporting indicated he had been released.

Then His Damaged Phone Rang

One detail from the rescue stayed with witnesses.

Before the ambulance took the teenager away, his phone began ringing.

The screen was cracked from the accident.

But the caller's name was still visible.

It read: “Mama.”

A doctor answered the call and told the teenager's mother that her son was alive and receiving care.

The moment was reported by B.Z., which interviewed people who helped at the scene.

For a mother waiting on the other end of the phone, the news that her son had survived was what mattered most.

One Rescuer Said He Had to Help

Frank Kurze was among those who rushed toward the bus.

He later described the scene as chaotic.

When he saw people trying to lift the vehicle, he understood that they needed more hands.

He joined them.

Nurses who took part also spoke about how quickly people responded.

They did not know the injured teenager.

They were passengers, workers and strangers who happened to be nearby.

But in those few minutes, they acted together.

Berlin Police Thanked the Rescuers

Berlin police praised the people who helped free the teenager.

In a public message, the department called them civilian heroes and thanked the Spandau community.

The city's public transport operator, BVG, also expressed gratitude to everyone who assisted.

Police investigated the circumstances of the fall.

But the rescue itself became a story that traveled far beyond Germany.

Video footage showed people gathered against the side of the bus, working together to raise it.

A Rescue Made Possible by Ordinary People

The teenager survived an accident that could have ended very differently.

His rescue did not depend on one person performing an impossible feat.

It depended on dozens of people responding to the same emergency.

Passengers left their seats. Strangers ran toward the danger. Medical workers brought their skills and equipment.

And together, they moved a vehicle weighing more than 16 tons just enough to save a young man's life.

They may never have known his name. But when he needed help, nearly 40 strangers came together to bring him home alive.

Editor's note: This rescue occurred in Berlin on September 11, 2023. The bus's weight and the phone call from “Mama” were reported by German newspaper B.Z. The teenager survived; later reports indicated he was discharged after hospital treatment.
