Brett Yancey, an Alabama father battling stage 4 esophageal cancer, refused to miss his daughter’s homecoming moment at Southside High School.
Yancey had been fighting cancer for more than six years, and his health had grown weaker after rounds of treatment. But when his daughter Sara Kate was honored during homecoming, he made it clear he wanted to walk beside her.

The emotional moment happened on Sept. 29 at Southside High School in Southside, Alabama.
Brett’s wife, Carrie Yancey, said the family was worried he would not have enough strength to cross the football field. He had been so weak that even walking short distances had become difficult.
The family offered to take him across the field in a golf cart. But Brett wanted to walk with Sara Kate himself.
According to family accounts, Brett told his wife he did not need a golf cart because he was going to walk his baby to the other sideline.
Brett looked frail as he walked with his arm around Sara Kate. Still, he held on and kept moving across the field.
Carrie said she could feel her heart pounding as she watched them. She said she kept praying that he could make it.
Sara Kate was later crowned homecoming queen, turning the night into a memory her family will carry forever. Carrie said tears rolled down her face as she watched the moment unfold.
