A routine beach trip turned into a fight for survival off the coast of Australia. On January 30, 13-year-old Austin Appelbee swam for nearly four hours through rough ocean waters to get help for his mother and siblings. He had no life jacket and no guarantee he would make it back.
“I just said, ‘Not today, not today, not today. I have to keep on going,’” Austin told ABC News Australia. His determination likely saved his family’s lives.
A Calm Day Turns Dangerous
Austin was at the beach with his mother, Joanne Appelbee, and his two younger siblings. The family had taken a kayak and two inflatable paddleboards into the ocean and planned to stay out for about an hour.
At first, conditions were calm. Then the weather changed suddenly. Strong winds and waves flipped the kayak, which began taking on water, leaving the family drifting farther from shore.
A Mother Makes an Impossible Decision
Joanne tried towing the paddleboards while keeping her younger children afloat. As the kayak filled with water, she realized they needed help fast. She made the difficult call to send Austin toward shore alone.
“In the beginning, it was, ‘We’re going to be fine and Austin is going to make it back,’” she said. “As time went on, I was like, ‘Why hasn’t anyone come?’”
Four Hours Alone in the Ocean
Austin initially tried paddling with the damaged kayak, but the waves were too strong. He abandoned it and swam on his own, focusing on staying calm. He said he thought about his family, friends, and even his favorite Thomas the Tank Engine character to keep going.
“I was just thinking I was going to make it through,” he said. “But I was also thinking about all my friends at school.”
Collapse, Then One More Push
When Austin finally reached shore, he collapsed from exhaustion. But the rescue was not over. He still had to run about a mile down the beach to reach the family’s phone and call emergency services.
Rescuers later reached Joanne and the younger children at sea. All were brought to safety.
A Family Grateful and Proud
Joanne called her son’s actions extraordinary. “He’s absolutely amazing,” she said. “Me and his dad are super proud.”
Officials and safety experts have since reminded beachgoers about checking weather conditions and wearing proper safety gear, guidance echoed by groups like Surf Life Saving Australia.
Austin’s swim has since drawn praise across Australia, with many calling him a hero for his courage, endurance, and love for his family.
