11-Year-Old Girl Rescued After Surviving 3 Days at Sea Following Mediterranean Shipwreck
An 11-year-old girl from Sierra Leone has emerged as the sole survivor of a harrowing shipwreck that claimed the lives of over 40 migrants in the Mediterranean. The tragedy unfolded off the coast of Italy’s Lampedusa island, as severe storms capsized the boat carrying 45 individuals attempting to cross the sea. The girl’s survival has been hailed as nothing short of miraculous.
Rescue operations, led by the German charity organization CompassCollective, found the young survivor after she had spent three days adrift in stormy seas. Clinging to an improvised flotation device made from tire inner tubes, the child managed to stay alive until rescuers arrived.
“She is the sole survivor from this tragic incident. Her resilience in the face of such odds is extraordinary,” a CompassCollective spokesperson stated.
The vessel had reportedly set sail from Sfax, Tunisia, with dozens of passengers onboard. According to early accounts provided by the survivor, the group encountered a powerful storm shortly after departure. Despite efforts to weather the conditions, the boat ultimately capsized, leaving most passengers unaccounted for.
“We assume all others aboard the boat are lost. The girl’s testimony confirms the severe impact of the storm,” added the spokesperson.
The survivor’s ordeal has brought renewed attention to the ongoing migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. Migrant rescue agencies and humanitarian organizations have reiterated calls for more robust international cooperation to address the risks faced by refugees and asylum seekers attempting such perilous crossings.
